Constelações | video | 2003-2004

When Dardot was nominated for the 4th Awards, only one pilot study in the first series (Rio de Janeiro) had been engraved. Now the three series have been finished and may be shown as proposed by Dardot: on a plasma screen, on which we can see the complete work, with words embedded in their constellations. Marila recorded the nocturnal landscapes in the three cities – Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Sao Paulo – seeking constellations in the starry skies configured by lighting in the cities. In each landscape, editing the video on a computer provided sequences of approximately two to four minutes, in which the lights fade away until only a few remain and form words. Dardot found the words “mar”, “vem” and “ar” (BH); “aqui”, “sim” and “dia” (RJ); “ir”, “vôo” and “se” (SP). The work attempts to place limits on word and image, through time and sedimentation or purification of things, until it is reduced to the essential. Obviously, beyond any gestalt proposition, Dardot’s poetic pursuit is located on a plane of subjectivity, which seeks to unveil the eye, and render visible that which was hidden. In the words of Marília: I film cities at night. In their lights I look for a hidden word, a postmodern oracle. What does this urban sky tell me? Perhaps we only see what we want see, perhaps we only read what we want to read; but in any case the words are potentially there, as are the patterns of the constellations. Such are oracles, projections of our desires.
