The six winners of the II Sergio Motta Cultural Award were announced by the Sergio Motta Institute and the State of São Paulo?s Culture department on November 26, 2001 in a ceremony at Sala São Paulo in the city?s downtown area. Leading personalities from the cultural and political communities attended the event, including First Lady Ruth Cardoso, José Serra (Minister of Health), Paulo Renato (Minister of Education), and the state?s Culture secretary Marcos Mendonça.
The award-winners were Bruno Lopes de Abreu Lima, Laércio Redondo, Sônia Andrade, Caio Reisenwitz, Leandro J. Selister and Ricardo Barreto. Three R$ 15,000 awards were made for ?concluded work?, while the other three received R$ 12,000 incentive bursaries to help finish projects in progress. Three ?honorable mention? awards were made to artists André Ricardo Mehmari, Lara Pinheiro and Lea Van Steen, and Silvia Regina F. de Laurentiz.
The 2nd Sergio Motta Cultural Award surpassed all expectations in terms of the number and scope of works submitted by artists from all over Brazil. There were 191 entries and the Selection Commission designated another 24 works. Judging took from the 25th to the 28th of September to nominate 31 works by artists living in 7 different states.

The 2nd Award jury members were Benjamin Taubkin (musician, instrumentalist and consultant with Itaú Cultural), Fernando Cocchiarale (art critic and curator, Museu de Arte Moderna), Martin Grossmann (professor, School of Communication and Arts, USP and vice-director of Museu de Arte Contemporânea, USP), Milton Sogabe (professor of Visual Arts at the Arts Institute, Universidade Estadual Paulista and multimedia artist), Moacir dos Anjos (director of Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães-Recife and curator of the Itaú Cultural Visual Arts program 2001/2002), and Suzete Venturelli (doctor in Arts and Science, professor / coordinator of the Arts Institute, Unb).
